An afterthought:

Anything which is worth doing is worth doing well - SO do your best and arrange time for it. Never say you don't have time - you "make" time. "Busy" is just an excuse for not doing your homework.

Plan, Do, Practice, Focus, Concentrate, Be Creative & Enjoy whatever comes - that is the way to succeed as a true musician. Learning is an infinity process.

Do the thing you like and you will never need to complain. One will never complain about how plentiful the food they like but a pinch of what they don't like will be too much. Dealing with obstacles, failure and problems in life will make one stronger, more experienced, wiser, more knowledgeable and more careful in the future AND be thankful for all that. Don't do or live a life of what others want you to live. You make your own decision, make your own choice, have your own opinion and most important of all - Live Your Own Life.

I strongly believe that everyone has a God-Given-Talent to excel in at least one thing in their life. So find it and make use of it. Everything is possible if you have the mind and heart for it. Remember "Man can go to the moon".

The couples were here in Kota Kinabalu for their Wedding Photo Shoot. Jane is a former cello student of Yap Ling and piano student of Grace Lee. Henry Ling is a former "boy" from the 1st Sibu Company of the Boys' Brigade. Both were also members of the Orkestra Dewan Suarah Sibu (ODSS) where Yap Ling was their conductor. 4 Prelude Music students selected for Permata Seni Muzik

22 October, 4 of our young music talents from Prelude Music did a pre-concert performance in front of live audience at the foyer of the Istana Budaya Kuala Lumpur, in conjunction with the National Symphony Orchestra concert, appropriately themed as “Discovering Malaysia Young Stars”

Yap Yi (9) and Yap Qin (11), from SK ( C ) Anglo Chinese, Penampang ; Lauren Lok Hui Shan (10) from SRS Datuk Simon Fung; and Bryan Liew Chun-Sin (13) from Tshung Tshin Secondary School mesmerized the audience with their colorful traditional Sabah tribal costumes and their captivating music. Their repertoire included a medley of Gunung Kinabalu and Jambatan Tamparuli, The Entertainer, Blue Danube, Spring Song and La Paloma.

Dinner treat by Chan Ning LEE and his parents at the Cafe TATU, Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa, KK. Chan Ning is now studying Medicine at the King's College London. But he still keeps up with his violin playing a lot by joining the Universities of London Orchestra and playing chamber music. At the moment he is back in KK for Summer holidays and has been helping out in the JPO and the KKYO for the Tip of Borneo's Music Festival on 3 July in Kudat and the Kian Kok Youth Orchestra Concert on 14 August in KK.

Nicholas was selected to participate in the QVSS in Jan. this year.

The Summer School, founded in 2003, takes place over two weeks in mid January. QVSS is a fully residential programme - providing a unique study opportunity solely focused on solo performance for highly talented young violinists. QVSS is a challenging and supportive learning environment where students work intensively with specialist professionals. In addition to providing advanced music tuition, QVSS helps students understand that motivation, focus, and strength of character are values as crucial to musical success as talent.

The previous seven Summer Schools were unequivocal successes. Students were selected by audition from applicants coming from throughout New Zealand and overseas. QVSS students have been selected for international music conservatories and music festivals, as well as the New Zealand Youth Orchestra. Student successes also include solo performances with leading New Zealand Orchestras, numerous appearances in the finals of the Chamber Music New Zealand Chamber Music Contest and winners of the National Concerto Competition.

Yap Ling paid a visit to his UMS Double Bass student, Kong Jian Yuan who is now finishing his practicum for his final year with National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) at the Istana Budaya. Yap Ling also met up with Wong Tze Wai who is a composer and choral conductor. He is also in the panel of MPO Composer Forum where they are to compose for the MPO to play.

Yap Ling was in Sibu from 26-30 June for the Grace Singers' "Yellow River Cantata" Concert on 29 June where he was invited to perform a few solo numbers. The concert went very well indeed with about 400+ audience at the Wei Kuok Assembly Hall, Sibu.

Tiek Kwang is now based in Gold Coast as Graphic Designer and Tiek Dung has just completed his Doctorate Study in Medicine in Ukraine and is on his way back. Tiek Ming is now working in KL.

Joshua Tang, Anette Lajumin & Heng Tseng Wen were all here in KK. Joshua was back to Sibu for holidays from NZ and he came to KK for a visit. Anette, Chris and her mum Monica returned from Adelaide, Australia for vacation too. Likewise Tseng Wen who is now waiting to get into University in Adelaide. Both Joshua (4th year) and Anette (her 2nd degree) are now pursuing Medicine in Otago and Sydney respectively. There were certainly a lot of catching up to do. Ku Sim Yee was there too because she will be off to study music oversea very soon, most probably in Adelaide. We wish them all the best for their study.

James Lau is the former student of Yap Ling and Grace Lee. He is now doing very well in teaching and running a music school, the Symphony Music School in Miri. He is very capable and versatile in playing all kind of instruments including the harp even though his main instrument is the violin. In order to better himself, he still seek advice from Yap Ling from time to time. He is also the resident conductor of the Miri Orchestra & Choir (MOC)

How much each music note costs you if you don’t practice?
How much time and money you spend on your normal school as compare to your music lessons. Does it do justice?
Why others are learning so much faster than you? Ask them and compare the difference.
Since you are already making such an investment, why not trying your best to make it worthy? Why wasting your time and money?
Playing an instrument is not like other study where you can burn "mid-night torch" and still be able to get a good result. The playing is physical and your muscles need to be trained to be able to take control.
Lazy people always cannot find time and the busy one always have plenty of time. Why? Are the excuses really necessary?
If geniuses are born genius without hard work and sacrifices?
The more you like certain thing the more you spend time on it and is the same vice versa.
Students tend to do well if they have encouragement and support from their piers and especially their family.
Learning to play an instrument is like paddling the boat upstream against the current. Once you stop the boat will move backward because of the current. Well, that is what happened when you stop playing.

A lunch treat from Lisa Chia at Atlantis, Damai. She has just passed her ATCL Diploma with Distinction and we are celebrating. She will be leaving for KL to study music at Sedaya Univeristy tomorrow majoring in violin. We'll miss her and we wish her all the best.

Surprisingly we all met at PJ Church. Top: Yap Ling with Ting Kee Yong (Trumpeter) who is now working in KL; Bottom: With Dr.Yek Kiung Wei who is a medical doctor. He was Yap Ling's first batch of clarinet students who passed ABRSM Grade 8. Both were ODSS members and members of the Boys Brigade.

Robin Mok (Taiwan), Yap Ling & Charles Wong Chee Wei in KL

Robin is now living in Taiwan teaching the violin in group and Charles is now based in KL, an active choral conductor and composer who also conducts the Pay Fong Middle School Concert Band, Melaka. Both were Yap Ling's students and Orkestra Dewan Suarah Sibu (ODSS) 1st batch of members.
